CERTIFIED INPATIENT CODER (CIC)

COURSE INFORMATION AND FEATURES

The inpatient medical coding certification standard, Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC™), is dedicated exclusively to inpatient hospital/facility coding. The CIC validates knowledge and experience in getting information from the medical record for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding, and it signifies specific payment knowledge in Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups and the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS).

CICs have demonstrated:

Expertise in medical record review to get information to support accurate inpatient coding

Skill in assigning correct ICD-10 medical codes for diagnoses and procedures performed.

Expert knowledge of current rules, regulations, and issues related to medical coding, compliance, and reimbursement under the MS-DRG system.

Coders also have specialized payment knowledge in MS-DRGs and Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems (IPPS).”

Ability to integrate coding and reimbursement to include updating the charge description master (CDM), fee updates, and the Field Locators (FL) on the UB04.

Solid understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology to code facility services and diagnoses correctly.

Knowledge of Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) reimbursement methodologies.

The CIC certification, is targeted to working professionals in inpatient settings. The CIC validates expert knowledge and experience in getting information from the medical record for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding.

  • 5 hours and 40 minutes exam duration

The CIC examination tests the correct application of ICD-10-PCS procedure codes and ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes.
